The Project for the Construction of the Flyover of Cotonou City in Benin
Country: Benin
Client: JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency)
Period:
Preparatory Survey: October 2018 to March 2020
Detailed Design: May 2021 to August 2022
Outline:
Cotonou is the largest city located in the south of Benin with the Autonomous Port of Cotonou facing the Gulf of Guinea. It is a main transit point of the Abidjan-Lagos corridor, which connects the two major cities in West Africa, and it can also be used as a starting point of the Cotonou-Niamey corridor playing an important role for logistics to inland countries.
The objective of this project is to improve the Bedoco intersection located on both corridors above. The current Bedoco intersection is crowded throughout the day, peaking in the morning and evening hours, hindering smooth logistics and urban traffic. In addition, road floods due to signal malfunctions and inadequate drainage facilities also cause traffic congestion, which threatens the safety of citizens and economic activities in the region.
In order to improve the traffic congestion on the Bedoco intersection, we are planning to construct a viaduct with a length of approximately 270m and transform the roundabout into a crossroads intersection. By improving the traffic congestion, we aim to strengthen logistics and industries in Cotonou, Benin and West Africa.
