Aqaba, on the Red Sea in southern Jordan, is the gateway to trade and logistics in the country and the surrounding region, and is designated as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Aqaba also plays a role in the country's tourism development as the Golden Triangle of Jordanian tourism with the Petra site and Wadi Rum. Under the Smart City concept, the project has updated the Urban Planning Master Plan with a target year of 2040, in order to develop Aqaba to its potential.
